Concert: Klezmer & The Classics
June 18 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm
£15
Join us in the beautiful setting of Garnethill Synagogue, for a concert programme of klezmer and classical music by musicians from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Garnethill is a Category A listed building, opened in 1879. It has an active congregation and also houses the Scottish Jewish Heritage Centre and Scottish Jewish Archives Centre.
Klezmer music has its origins in Europe. The word is a Yiddish contraction of the Hebrew words for instrument (kley) and song (zemer). This traditional folk music borrows inspiration from music from the synagogue, Roma peoples, European folk musics, and even classical music. At its heart, it is party music, and is often played at weddings and other festive events.
Full details of the programme will be added here closer to the event, but it will be a mix of Klezmer and classical songs. The event includes an interval and a snack.
This event is hosted by Garnethill Synagogue and the Scottish Jewish Heritage Centre. It is sponsored by BEMIS and supported by a donation from SKY delivered through the Corra Foundation. Our thanks to them and also to Paul Edlin, Susan Siegel and the Esterson Trust for their generosity.
