Guided Walk: Garnethill Refugee Trail

April 10, 2022 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

£4 – £5

Join us on a guided walk of the Garnethill Refugee Trail, led by staff from the Scottish Jewish Heritage Centre and Scottish Jewish Archives Centre. The trail reveals places in Garnethill that are connected with Jewish refugees who came to Glasgow from Europe before, during and after the Second World War. Find out where children from the Kindertransport stayed, and learn about the house on Sauchiehall Street where refugees were able to meet and mix with local people.

The walk will take approximately an hour and a quarter, starting and finishing at Garnethill Synagogue. After the walk there will be an opportunity to view ‘Scotland a Sanctuary’ in the Succah. This exhibition is based on material in the collections of the Scottish Jewish Archives Centre, and shows how people from all backgrounds throughout Scotland helped those in peril. The Succah also houses searchable issues of the digitised Jewish Echo newspaper from 1928–1950, and a digital catalogue of key items from the Scottish Jewish Archives Centre’s refugee-era collections.

The Garnethill Refugee Trail was created as part of the development of the Scottish Jewish Heritage Centre, funded by: The National Lottery Heritage Fund; The Association of Jewish Refugees; The Wolfson Family Charitable Trust; The Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany, Edinburgh; The Architectural Heritage Fund – William Grant Foundation; and Community Security Trust.
