Book Now: Free Visits for Local Authority Schools

by | Apr 22, 2026 | News

To mark the 5th anniversary of the Scottish Jewish Heritage Centre, we are offering 50 free class visits to local authority schools across Scotland during 2026 and 2027. In addition to waiving the visit fee we will also provide kosher-approved snacks for all pupils during their visit.

Schools visiting the Heritage Centre are already able to take advantage of the Heritage Travel subsidy, administered by Historic Environment Scotland. This is applicable for multiple class visits and enables schools to claim 75% of travel costs to a maximum of £350.

Additionally, for special schools and units and schools where the majority of pupils come from the most deprived areas (SIMD 1 and 2), it is possible to claim 100% of travel costs to the same maximum amount. Taking advantage of the subsidy alongside the visit fee waiver now means that visit costs can be partly, or completely covered.

At SJHC we want to make visits as accessible as possible and encourage visits from schools across Scotland, so we hope that these provisions will help to make it easier for teachers to bring pupils on site for a visit, and to encourage schools who have never visited before.

Over the past 5 years we have welcomed over 5,600 pupils on over 210 school visits, and reached schools in 24 out of 32 of Scotland’s local authority areas. We offer sessions for primary and secondary pupils on Judaism, the Holocaust and the history of Jewish immigration to Scotland. For more information on our range of sessions and to book a visit, see the schools section of our website.

We particularly want to support schools from economically deprived and geographically remote areas of the country to visit. If a visit is still not possible with the above provisions due to reasons of cost, please contact us as we may be able to provide additional top up funds.

We hope to welcome you soon!

Thank you to our funders for providing us the financial support to offer these free visits.
